Day 1
Arrival in Scotland midday and pick up self drive car (or overnight in Edinburgh on Day 0). Leave Edinburgh and travel first to Stirling, the historic Royal Burgh, which played an important role in the turbulent Scottish history. Visit the impressive castle, if time allows. Continue on the A84 road, pass Doune and on to Callander, charming market town. Your route will take you further via Aberfoyle and through one of Scotland's most beautifully
scenic areas - The Trossachs region. Overnight in the area.
Day 2
Head this morning towards Drymen and Balloch and follow the banks of Loch Lomond, the largest and perhaps most beautiful of all Scottish lochs and pass Crianlarich. Onto the A82 road through impressive glens before reaching Glencoe, whose name in Gaelic means the "valley of tears". Pass
Ballachulish and continue to Fort William, which lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis - Britain's highest mountain at 1344 metres. Overnight in Fort William area.
Day 3
After breakfast, take the A861 road towards the West Coast, passing Glenfinnan Monument. Onto Arisaig and Mallaig where you take the ferry to Armadale on the Isle of Skye, the largest of the Inner Hebrides islands. Maybe there is time to visit the Clan Donald Centre near Armadale, before driving along the main road to Broadford and Portree. Time permitting, continue to the north of the island and visit Dunvegan Castle. Overnight on the Isle of Skye.
Day 4
Leave the island this morning via the Skye Bridge. Continue your journey northwards through the spectacular loch and sea scenery, along Loch Carron to Loch Torridon and Loch Maree to Gairloch. Why not drive on to the tropical Inverewe Gardens for a visit. Overnight in the Gairloch area.
Day 5
This morning travel along Loch Broom. Stop at the spectacular Corrieshalloch Gorge with the 150 foot Falls of Measach that you can admire from the suspension bridge viewpoint. Follow the A835 road to Garve and Muir of Ord. Pass the Beauly Firth and arrive in Inverness, the "Capital of the Highlands". Overnight in the Inverness area.
Day 6
In the morning maybe visit Culloden Moor, scene of the crushing defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army in 1746. Continue to Nairn, popular seaside resort famous for its golf course and beautiful sandy beaches. Travel through the Spey Valley, with its many famous Malt whisky distilleries, such as Cardhu, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Tamdhu and Tomatin, to name only a few – at least one should be visited! Continue through the Grampian region, also known as Scotland's Castle Country. Overnight in the Royal Deeside area.
Day 7
For a day excursion in the area follow the A92 coastal road to Stonehaven. Take a walk and visit nearby Dunnotar Castle, a ruined fortress perched on a rocky cliff 160 feet above the sea. Return inland towards Banchory and follow the A93 road, pass Aboyne and arrive in Ballater. If open, see nearby
Balmoral Castle, the family holiday home of the Royal Family for over a century. Returning back to your hotel in the area later in the afternoon. Overnight as day 6.
Day 8
On to Braemar, where the Royal Highland Games take place each year, attended by the Royal Family. Pass Glenshee and Blairgowrie and make a small detour to visit the 17th century Glamis Castle. Continue your travel southwards via Coupar Angus and Perth, former capital of Scotland and beautifully situated by the River Tay. Finally arrive in St. Andrews, Scotland's famous university town and centre of golfing history. Overnight in the Kingdom of Fife.
Day 9
Return today after breakfast to Edinburgh, following the East Coast and passing through the quaint small fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and Largo. Cross the impressive suspension bridge over the Forth Estuary and arrive at Edinburgh airport for departure.
